There is a consensus building among researchers that vocabulary is the missing link in reading education. Many children enter school 3,000–4,000 words behind their peers in oral vocabulary. By the fifth grade, this vocabulary gap has turned into a five-year deficit in reading comprehension.
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), 69% of fourth graders, 67% of eighth graders, and 60% of twelfth graders scored below the proficient reading level.
