At WordSmart, it is of utmost importance to us that you have a safe and secure experience while visiting our site. We also want you to be aware that in some circumstances, we must collect customer information. We recognize that we must maintain and use your information responsibly, and this document explains our practices regarding the information you submit to us via our website.
Visitors to our website can browse some areas of the site without disclosing any personally identifiable information. We do track information provided to us by your browser, including the website you came from (known as the “referring URL”), the type of browser you use and the date and time of your access. WordSmart also logs your Internet Protocol (IP) Address. An IP address is a number that is automatically assigned to your PC every time you browse the Internet. Information from IP addresses is used for system administration, to examine overall traffic trends, and to troubleshoot. This information is used only in the aggregate form. IP addresses are not linked to any personally identifiable information. This means that the user session is tracked but the user remains anonymous.
In order to make purchases and to receive mailings, we ask users to register. The following information may be required for registration: first and last name, email address, and password. You also have the capability to opt in or out of receiving WordSmart’s mailings and mailings from partners and affiliates of WordSmart.
To make a purchase on WordSmart, we require that you provide your shipping and billing address (if they differ), phone number and credit card information (if paying by credit card) in addition to your registration information. This information is stored in a secured database, only accessible to employees with access rights to this information. WordSmart makes every effort to protect your online order information using 128-bit encryption based on Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology.
Protecting your information is a priority. WordSmart makes every effort to protect your online order and account information using SSL and 128-bit encryption, the most secure commercially available technology online.
SSL encrypts your information to avoid the decoding of it by anyone other than WordSmart. To check the security of your connection, look at the lower right-hand corner of your browser window after accessing the website. If you see an unbroken key or a closed lock (depending on your browser), SSL is active. You can also double check by looking at the URL line of your browser.
Some versions of firewalls do not permit communication through secure servers. In that case, you will be unable to connect to the server (and you won’t have to worry about placing an order through an unsecured connection).
If you cannot access a secure server for any reason, please feel free to call our customer service department during business hours at 1-800-641-WORD and place your order by phone. Our Customer Service representatives will be happy to assist you.
WordSmart employees are required to keep customer information private as a condition of their employment with the company. Only selected, authorized WordSmart employees are permitted to access your information. All employees and contractors must abide by our privacy policy. Those who violate that policy are subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of their employment and legal action.
WordSmart creates aggregate data about visitors for product development and improvement activities. We also use it for market analysis. We may provide information from our website in aggregate form, with identifying information removed, to third parties. For example, we may tell a partner what percentage of our users resides in a particular geographical area. When aggregated information is provided, we pool it from many individual records and strip it of any data that could be used to identify an individual before it is used. WordSmart maintains an opt-in phone list for the purposes of gathering feedback for the improvement of its products and websites, provision of service to site visitors and customers, setting up user accounts, contacting contest winners, and for sales and marketing purposes.
By agreeing to the terms and conditions of this privacy policy, and providing WordSmart with a phone number, site users are adding themselves to WordSmart’s opt-in phone list and authorizing WordSmart to contact them for any of the above listed reasons. By providing WordSmart with a cell phone or land line phone number and agreeing to this policy, user consents to allowing WordSmart to contact them using predictive and/or automated dialing to both cell and land-line phone numbers. Visitors who provide WordSmart with a phone number also authorize WordSmart to contact them via telephone for telemarketing purposes regardless of their phone number’s on status on the National Do-Not-Call List, or any do-not-call-list or registry maintained by any of the States or local governments within the United States. WordSmart will not charge cell phone or land-line users for any calls placed to them by WordSmart, but WordSmart is not liable for any of the user’s telecommunications usage fees charged by the user’s phone company. Visitors who do not wish to be contacted by phone may opt-out by emailing webmaster@wordsmart.com with an message containing the name and phone number that are to be removed from our contact list, or by calling 1-800-641-WORD and making the same request. Uncollected winnings from contests or sweepstakes may become forfeit as the result of deletion from wordsmart.tv’s contact list. Phone numbers given to wordsmart.tv will not be shared with any other companies to use in sales or marketing. WordSmart may also use a combination of address and name information to lookup or append phone numbers to a site user’s information. By agreeing to the terms and conditions of this site, a visitor who provides WordSmart with address and last name information is agreeing to allow WordSmart to append address/name information using services such as electronic telephone directories. Visitors who provide this information are also agreeing to being added to WordSmart’s opt-in phone list, pursuant to the rules listed in the eleventh paragraph of these terms.During the checkout process, you will have the option to participate in third party mailings. If you opt in to receive information from WordSmart and its partners and affiliates, your first and last name and postal address may be shared with those third parties. If you opt in to receive mailings from WordSmart only or opt out entirely, your information will not be shared with third parties.
If we discover that a third party inadvertently disclosed personal information about any of our customers, we will take immediate action to prevent further occurrences.
Other than the cases described above, WordSmart will not release personally identifiable information to a third party without the customer’s consent.
If you no longer wish to receive future third party mailings, you can unsubscribe by sending an email to optout@wordsmart.com with “no third parties” in the subject line. In the event that WordSmart is merged with or acquired by a third party, we retain the right to transfer all personal (consumer) information databases to successors in business or purchasers of the site and its assets.
Unsubscribe information and link is offered on every emailed newsletter and promotion. You can remove yourself from our mailings at any time by sending a request to unsubscribe@wordsmart.com, with the word “unsubscribe” in the subject line.
WordSmart understands that young people need special safeguards and privacy protection. We realize they may not understand all the provisions of our policy or be able to make thoughtful decisions about the choices that are made available to our adult users. We urge all parents to participate in their children’s exploration of the Internet and any online services, and to teach their children about protecting their personal information while online. WordSmart knowingly will not collect personally identifiable information from children under 13. As our privacy policies change in significant ways, we will make every effort to notify you of the changes. Minor changes to the policy may occur that will not affect our use of individually identifiable information. When the privacy policy changes in a way that significantly affects the way we handle personal information, we will not use the information we have previously gathered without obtaining consent from the appropriate individual.
