Great Vocabulary Builders

Learning new vocabulary words expands your understanding of others and improves your mental muscles. Every new vocabulary word you learn lets your mind expand into new areas of learning. You can improve your vocabulary as well as improve your reading skills with simple vocabulary building exercises and games.

If you want to build your vocabulary, there are many approaches you can use. One good way is to read magazine or newspaper articles that are a little more difficult than what you normally read. When you come across a vocabulary word that you don’t know, try to figure out its meaning from the vocabulary word’s context.

Many words in the English vocabulary are made up of common bases and roots that they share with other vocabulary words. You might be able to figure out the meaning of a new vocabulary word from its root or the way the syllables are put together and the way it is used. Consult a dictionary just to be sure of a vocabulary word’s meaning.

If you come across a vocabulary word that you don’t understand during the course of a conversation or lecture, you can ask someone to explain the meaning of the vocabulary word. Many people are reluctant to do this because they are afraid of exposing their ignorance by asking. If you don’t want to ask anyone else for the meaning of vocabulary words you don’t know, be sure to make a note of those new words and look them up later.

Another good way to improve your vocabulary is through a word of the day calendar. These calendars offer you a new vocabulary word along with the definition and how to use it in a sentence. If you use the new vocabulary word throughout the day, you will be sure to remember it. By the end of the year you will have added 365 new words to your vocabulary. What a great vocabulary builder!
